Head of School Search

October 18, 2018Peter Lee

Dear Bishop Walker School Community,

I write today with an important announcement regarding the Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys.

After more than 10 years of extremely dedicated and extraordinary service to the School, James R. Woody, our current President and Executive Director, has decided to retire approximately 18 months from now, as of June 30, 2020. James was a member of our Founding Board before there was even a school. James shepherded the growth of BWS from our first Junior-Kindergarten class in the basement of Anacostia’s St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in the fall of 2008 through today’s current configuration as a Kindergarten-5th grade elementary school located in a new building on the beautiful campus of THEARC. Having James promote our mission and guide us in fulfillment of our vision in this critical first decade has truly been a gift to our School, and we are blessed that James will continue to serve as President and Executive Director for the next two academic years. James will leave us with a School that is stronger today than it has ever been, and a School that could not be better positioned for this moment of transition.

The Governing Board has already started the work of identifying a new Head of School for BWS, with a start date of July 1, 2020. Current Board members Chip Molster and Jalene Spain Thomas have graciously agreed to co-chair the eleven-member Search Committee. This will be a big step for the School, and we are very pleased that we have so much time to complete this very important – and exciting – process.

In aid of the search, we have retained The Education Group (TEG), a top-tier national private and independent school search and placement firm. Both our School and TEG are members of the National Association of Episcopal Schools, and several of TEG’s consultants are former heads of Episcopal schools. Consultants from TEG will be visiting the school from October 23-25 to assist us in the development of a position and school description to be used during the search, which will formally launch in January. We will also be reaching out to the greater BWS community, and will have opportunities for input and dialog with parents, faculty, staff, supporters, and other School constituencies. We will continue to send out updates during the search process through newsletters and on the BWS website, and the Governing Board will announce our new Head of School at the end of the search process.

This is an exciting, prayerful, and important time in the history of BWS. Over the coming months, we will have opportunities to celebrate James’ enormous contributions to the Bishop Walker School and to honor him for his tireless leadership. I hope that each of you will join in these festivities. I look forward to engaging with you as we select our new Head of School, and celebrate James’ many accomplishments.
