Director of Curriculum Design and Implementation

Bishop John Walker School for Boys seeks a confident and visionary educator for the 2020-21 school year (beginning July 1, 2020) who will enthusiastically embrace and advance the school’s mission through supporting the development of K-5 curriculum and the professional development of faculty. The Director of Curriculum Design and Implementation (DCDI) will be responsible for the design and implementation of the Kindergarten through Grade 5 academic program and faculty professional development. The DCDI will work closely with the Head of School, administrative team, and academic support specialists to help Bishop Walker School realize its mission, philosophy and vision through its academic programs.

The DCDI will report to the Head of School. He/she will make decisions and handle many duties and responsibilities independently, though in accordance with established procedures and policies, and will seek direction from the Head of School in unusual or unique situations.

The DCDI will be responsible for the following major duties and responsibilities:

Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment

  • Review the current academic programs of the school in collaboration with administrative leadership to evaluate effectiveness and oversee the design and mapping of the Kindergarten through Grade 5 academic program, paying special attention to scope and sequence, grade transitions, and student performance data
  • Develop the Kindergarten through Grade 5 curriculum to ensure that teaching and learning methodologies, practices, and assessments are cohesive across grade-levels and align with the school’s mission, values, strategic initiatives and current educational trends and research
  • Serve as a partner with teachers in matters of teaching methods, assessment and curriculum implementation, including, but not limited to teacher observations, modeling lessons, goal setting for improved practice, suggesting culturally responsive content and practices, research and training in approaches to assessment, differentiated instruction, data collection, and trauma-informed pedagogy
  • Develop a comprehensive and actionable plan to train teachers to collaborate with learning specialists in identifying, evaluating, and coordinating academic support of students with learning disabilities
  • Identify opportunities and suggest methods for teacher collaboration, instructional integration and multidisciplinary unit/course development in order to create a more purposeful and connected curriculum
  • Coordinate with the Assistant Head for Academics and School Culture to gather, maintain, securely store, and analyze academic data as needed to support student academic progress and teacher evaluation
  • Liaise with the technology services on the implementation and evaluation of instructional technology needs 

Recruitment, Hiring, and Retention of Faculty

  • Participate in the candidate review process
  • Support orientation of all new faculty

Professional Development

  • In collaboration with Assistant Head of School for Academics and School Culture, develop, organize, and promote a professional development program, including, but not limited to professional development days, reviewing reports of faculty who have attended professional development programs, development and maintenance of a cycle of required topics to be addressed in professional development, and building of a 2-year calendar of professional days and topics
  • Coordinate individual faculty professional development plans 

Administrative Leadership

  • Lead and assist with additional curriculum and instruction related projects as directed by the Head of School
  • Attend BWS Board Education Committee meetings as needed


  • Master’s degree in an educational/related field, with a minimum of 5 years’ teaching experience required
  • Active researcher of best pedagogical practices, innovative teaching methods, and assessment required
  • Experience with differentiated instructional practices and/or a background in special education preferred
  • Educational ideology consistent with that of the school
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and organizational
  • Leadership and coaching style that perpetuates collegiality and collaboration while exhibiting enthusiasm and a positive attitude
